For stability studies and understanding the effect of having
to supply more reactive power on the generator, we have to consider the
capability chart of a generator. The specifications of synchronous machines are
given in MVA output at specified voltage and power factor. Such operation can
continue without excessive overheating. The maximum active power is decided by
the prime movers ability to provide mechanical input. The reactive power
maximum is decided by three considerations-armature current limit ,field
current limit and end region heating limit
It is now obvious for a particular value of MVA , in order
to supply more Q the P reduces. Real power is responsible for actual useful
work done. In order to supply more Q, the generator will not be able to produce
the useful real power.
